Micro Mention "The Silmarillion"

The original master of worldbuilding for its own sake, J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Silmarillion” is a must-read for any Epic Fantasy nerd or any LOTR uberfan. It reads more like a combination of a history book and a series of short stories, but its primary function is to deepen the world that “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” is built upon.

Tolkien was a professor in his day, and his fiction is an outgrowth of his scholarly pursuits. He was known for using actual Celtic and Norse myth to inform his fiction. If you ever have the chance to read the “Poetic Edda,” which is a collection of Norse poems and stories, you’ll quickly notice the overlaps, especially when it comes to the dwarves.
