Micro Mention "Ubik"

Philip K Dick

“Ubik” is a trippy Sci-Fi from Mr. Bladerunner himself, Phillip K Dick. It’s not just an unreliable narrator employed here, but an unreliable setting too, as reality seems to melt and change around the characters.

I get that some people don't like unreliable narrator as a literary device, but I do, and Dick takes it to extremes in this novel. It's a fun book, with a bit of the noir about it, but ultimately it's more of a bizarre meditation on the nature of reality than a story. While reality melts around the characters, it creates a sublime atmosphere of dread, but the payoff, in the end, was about what I thought it would be, and it ceases to be surprising somewhere at about the middle of the story.
