Talking In Obscurity, "At the Mountains of Madness" by H.P. Lovecraft

Dark Adventure Radio Theatre

Distance makes the heart grow fonder, my dear Obscurists. I apologize for being on such a sparse and erratic upload schedule, but I have a good one for you today.

Speaking of distance, Steven and I are taking you to a faraway destination, "At The Mountains of Madness," by H.P. Lovecraft, not once but twice in this double feature review. Today we compare the novella version of this story, written by the man himself, and Dark Adventure Radio Theatre's adaptation of this story as a radio drama. Dark Adventure Radio Theatre is part of The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, so if you want to check them out, click the link below.

Talking In Obscurity, "A Heart That Works" by Rob Delaney

Rob Delaney

We're back after a little, okay, a long break. The point is Steven, and I are here for you. To help you get into a new book. What book? "A Heart That Works," by Rob Delaney. It is quite possibly one of the saddest things ever. Not just books. THINGS!

Talking In Obscurity, "Red Rising," by Pierce Brown

Pierce Brown

I love this novel and talking about it with Steven, but to say it's a happy story would be, we'll say, disingenuous. Often a grim story, it contemplates the idea that the fascists will take over in the future after all, and thank god that isn't likely in today's world. ...Oh, I just made myself sad. Anyway, you should listen to Steven and me discuss "Red Rising."

Talking In Obscurity, "Who Goes There?," by John W. Campbell

John W. Campbell

I had a lot of fun talking about this horror novella by John W. Campbell, "Who Goes There?" It's the arch shapeshifter story that inspired my absolute favorite horror movie, John Carpenter's "The Thing."

Speaking of true selves, my true self is revealed about ten minutes in when I suddenly forgot, "don't speak like you'd normally speak, Kevin. Keep the use of profanity down to PG-13." Sorry, it's a rated R sort of day. In my most natural state, I'm foul-mouthed.

Talking In Obscurity, "The Sandman," by Neil Gaiman And Dirk Maggs

Neil Gaiman Dirk Maggs

So during this episode, where Steven and I talk about Neil Gaiman and Dirk Maggs's excellent radio drama version of "The Sandman." I used the word "adjective," where I meant to say "adverb," and the shame will be carried on by my descendants. I have since fallen on my grammar sword, but it was pretty blunt, so it was just mildly inconvenient.

Anyway, if you're interested in an audio experience about a DC comics character, "The Sandman" is awesome.

Talking In Obscurity, "Circe," by Madeline Miller

Madeline Miller

Ok, Obscurists, we're at the end of another month, so it's podcast time. For this one, Steven and I talk about "Circe" by Madeline Miller. This book is a wonderful modern reimagining of a minor character from "The Odyssey."

I am proud that at no point in this podcast did I fall back on my over-used explanation that it's like "Wicked" but with Greek Myth. Of course, I just did that here, so... clearly, I can't help myself. In any case, if you'd like to read my full review of this book, you can find it here.

Talking In Obscurity, "The Elementals," by Michael McDowell

Michael McDowell

Or Download This Episode Here:

Happy Halloween, Obscurists! Clearly, Steven and I are sticking with horror for today's book. It just wouldn't be right if we didn't.

"The Elementals" is a southern gothic horror that is also a generational family drama, a kind of story McDowell seemed to specialize in when he was alive.

Talking In Obscurity, "The Outsider," by Stephen King

Stephen King

Or Download This Episode Here:

We're at the end of September, Obscurists! So Steven and I thought since we're heading into the spooky season, we'd kick things off right with a Stephen King book.

"The Outsider" is a mix between police procedural, murder mystery, and straight-up horror. We hope you enjoy hearing our thoughts on it!

James S.A. Corey

So it's the end of July, Obscurists! Steven and I are back to discuss one of my favorite books I read during the pandemic, "Leviathan Wakes" by James S.A. Corey.

This is the first book in "The Expanse" series, and it's a mixture of Hard Sci-Fi meets neo-noir and all-out horror. There is also a show on Amazon Prime based on these books, which I love as well.

Talking In Obscurity, "The Panic Virus," by Seth Mnookin

Seth Mnookin

Or Download This Episode Here:

We're back, folks! After a long hiatus, Steven and I are here to talk about books again. And after such a long break due to a pandemic, what should we talk about? Something with "virus" right in the name. That's the Talking in Obscurity guarantee; never read the room.

But seriously, it's a nonfiction book about the "do vaccines cause autism" debate. Short answer: no.

Talking In Obscurity

Bonus post today! And going forward on the last day of each month. Come and listen to my good friend Steve Kubitz and I talk about books instead of just reading my old blog, which is a month old.

If you're like me, lazy and shifty, give your eyes a rest and listen about books instead of reading about them... for today and every last day of the month. I expect you back here next Friday to read this blog, I need to get enough of you to read it, so I can sell advertising, and buy my dream house in Toledo, OH for five hundred dollars. A man needs a dream, and we can't all have big dreams.
